FAQ
What is Base64?
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents arbitrary binary data using 64 printable characters. It is widely used to carry binary content over text-only protocols such as SMTP, JSON and URLs.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. It is normally paired with real security measures such as HTTPS or password hashing.
Why is Chinese text encoded longer than English?
Base64 operates on bytes. A Chinese character occupies 3 bytes in UTF-8, so its encoded form is roughly 4 times longer than a single English letter.
What is the URL-safe format?
The standard Base64 alphabet uses + and /, which have special meaning in URLs. The URL-safe variant replaces them with - and _ and drops the = padding.
