Area and Volume Converter
Convert between area and volume units — m², mu, hectare, acre, ft², litres, gallons and more.
How to Use
- Choose the category and units
Pick area or volume first, then the units to convert from and to — any combination works.
- Enter the value
Decimals and thousands separators are accepted, and negative values work for things like area differences.
- Scan the table
The table below lists the same value in every unit, so you can see immediately which one fits the job.
FAQ
Exactly how big is a mu?
2000/3 square metres, about 666.667 m². The 666.67 you see online is a rounded approximation, fine for everyday talk but slightly off when you multiply it by a price per square metre and then by a large area — the gap is small per mu and large across a field.
How do acres and hectares relate?
One acre is 4046.86 m² and one hectare is 10000 m², so a hectare is about 2.47 acres. Acres are the Anglo-American land and farming unit, hectares the metric one, and they convert freely between each other.
How much do US and UK gallons differ?
A US gallon is 3.78541 litres and a UK gallon is 4.54609 litres, so the UK one is about 20% larger. Whisky and milk come in UK gallons, petrol and industrial volumes in US gallons, and confusing them costs a fifth of the volume.
Where do the factors come from?
Straight from the NIST conversion relationships: length is defined in SI units and area and volume follow from it, so one square foot is 0.09290304 m² (0.3048 squared) and one cubic foot is 0.028316846592 m³ (0.3048 cubed). These are exact, not empirical approximations.
