FAQ
What is a healthy weight range?
By WHO standards a BMI between 18.5 and 24 is healthy. Multiply the square of your height in metres by 18.5 and 24 to get the lower and upper bounds.
What is the Devine formula?
It was originally developed for clinical drug dosing: ideal weight = 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft) for men, 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft) for women. It tends to be conservative.
Does being in the healthy range mean I am healthy?
Not necessarily. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so an athlete can have a high BMI with a normal body-fat percentage. Waist, body-fat percentage and blood pressure matter too.
Is there a single ideal weight?
No. Different formulas come from different populations and purposes and give slightly different results. Treat the healthy range as a guide and combine it with body-fat percentage and how you feel.
