FAQ
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For example, 65 kg at 1.70 m gives 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) ≈ 22.5.
What is a normal BMI?
The WHO reference classifies under 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal, 25.0–29.9 as overweight and 30.0 or above as obese. Chinese adult guidelines use 24.0 and 28.0 as the upper cut-offs.
What are the limitations of BMI?
BMI only reflects the ratio of height to weight and cannot tell muscle from fat. Muscular people can score as overweight with low body fat, and BMI is not suitable on its own for older adults or pregnant women. Combine it with body fat percentage and waist measurement.
What BMI should I aim for?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. This tool also shows the weight range in kilograms for your height, so you can set a concrete gain or loss target.
