FAQ
What is the difference between equal payment and equal principal?
With an equal-payment loan the instalment never changes, which is easy to budget but costs more interest overall. With an equal-principal loan the principal repaid is constant, so payments start high and fall each month while total interest is lower.
How is the monthly payment calculated?
Equal payment: P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ [(1+r)^n − 1], where P is the loan, r the monthly rate and n the number of months. Equal principal: principal per month = P ÷ n, with interest charged on the remaining balance. This tool does both.
What down payment is typical?
Most new-car loans ask for 20%–30% down. Lower down payments are possible but usually come with a higher rate or fees, and a bigger loan means more total interest.
Should I enter an annual or monthly rate?
Enter the annual rate in percent, for example 4.75. The tool converts it to a monthly rate (annual ÷ 12) automatically.
